In many packaging and industrial applications, there is need for structures combining multiple properties such as:
Mechanical strength Sealability at high at low temperature
Barrier to oxygen or water vapor Abrasion resistance
Flexibility (or rigidity) Gloss surface
Moisture and chemical resistance Transparency or Opacity
In many cases, the combination of these properties cannot be achieved by using a single material. For this reason manufacturers propose multilayer structures that exhibit amix of the individual performances of the polymers involved in the structure.
As most of the polymers are incompatible an adhesive layer also called tie layer is needed to obtain sufficient cohesion. Figure below show an example of multilayer structure.
